I very much admire Gerald Finley, however I really wish that people in charge of promotions would not cite the Gramophone Editor’s choice (eg March 2010 )….. The editor, after all, is onlu human, with his own areas of expertise, likes and dislikes, and so on; his personal opinion really shouldn’t be given such weight every single month.
I discovered some years ago that my own tastes differ sufficiently from the Editor’s for me to avoid his choices, unless I arrive at them independently. My doubts are accentuated by odd bits of evidence which support claims that the Gramophone is not as unbiased as one would wish.
I should add that none of these grumbles affects my enjoyment of Finley, who came to my attention before his current wave of success.
