“In a major interview with Gerald Finley, we explore how the Canadian singer has stealthily become one of the world’s great bass-baritones.”
From the November Gramophone newsletter
Sometimes there is no question what should be done. The bass-baritone Gerald Finley was to have had his long overdue Gramophone cover debut. It was already printed – but the sudden death of Dame Joan Sutherland meant that we had to change it to pay tribute to one of the most glorious voices, and most beloved artists, of our age. Finley himself was the first to agree – Sutherland had been an inspiration. You can read both my in-depth interview with Finley and some wonderful memories of Dame Joan (from Gramophone‘s John Steane and Edward Greenfield, plus Marilyne Horne, Zubin Mehta and Gwynne Howell) in the latest issue. The Gramophone Player, meanwhile, includes performances by La Stupenda herself, and a complete recording of Stanford’s thrilling Songs of the Sea from Finley, courtesy of our friends at Chandos.
