NATIONAL treasure Joanna Lumley OBE is to compere at a once-in-a-lifetime concert at Glyndebourne Opera House.

The actress and fierce campaigner is a also a one-time local girl with enduring links to Battle Abbey school where a scholarship is named after her.

The charity night will be on April 29 in aid of Young Epilepsy which dedicated to youngsters living with epilepsy and other neurological conditions.

The concert has been organised by mezzo soprano Jean Rigby whose son Ollie has severe epilepsy. The afternoon concert features exclusive appearances by Glyndebourne’s festival music director, Vladimir Jurowski and general director David Pickard, and will present a celebration of words and music from a wonderful cast of international stars of opera, stage and screen, including:

Ian Bostridge, Jason Carr, Sarah Connolly, Danielle de Niese, Gerald Finley, Dame Felicity Lott, Diana Montague, Paul Nilon, Brindley Sherratt, and Timothy West.

Mr Rigby said: “Our son Ollie has severe epilepsy and is a residential student at Young Epilepsy. He is now in his fifth year and is very well looked after, contented and happy: learning to cope with the challenges he faces now and in the future. I feel so indebted for all Young Epilepsy has done for him and this concert is my way of giving something back.”

The Young Epilepsy Gala Concert will run from 3pm to 5.30pm, including an interval. Guests will be able to wander the famous Glyndebourne gardens which will be open from 1pm.
